Meet the Team: Melissa Cullen

Clear, accurate Building Safety Case Reports rely on careful research, strong attention to detail and the ability to spot when something does not quite add up. At 4site Consulting, our Technical Authors help make sure each report is consistent, readable and supported by the right information before it reaches the client.

In this 4site spotlight, we introduce Melissa Cullen, Technical Author at 4site Consulting. Melissa works as part of our Building Safety Case team, writing, editing and quality-checking reports while reviewing everything from structure and readability to factual accuracy and technical consistency.

Before joining 4site, Melissa spent a decade working in publishing, where she developed the editorial skills that now support her work in building safety. In this article, she shares more about the investigative side of her role, the importance of keeping information organised and up to date, and why teamwork makes such a difference when deadlines are tight.

What does a typical day look like for you?

A typical day for me involves writing, editing and quality-checking BSC reports to make sure they are clear, accurate and consistent. I review reports for spelling, grammar, factual inconsistencies and overall readability, while also making sure they follow the required structure and standards.

What did you do before you worked at 4site?

Before joining 4site, I spent 10 years as a Senior Editor at County Wedding Magazines. I looked after four regional wedding magazines from start to finish, researching and writing features, editing content and signing off each issue before it went to print.

I was also the honeymoon and grooms editor across all 19 magazines, so I got to write about everything from dream destinations to suits and wedding-day style. It was a really varied role and gave me great experience in writing, editing and managing lots of different content at once.

What's one thing people might be surprised to learn about your job?

One thing people might be surprised to learn is how much investigation can go into producing a report. It is not just about correcting spelling and grammar - a big part of the job is checking technical information, spotting inconsistencies and making sure everything is clear, accurate and makes sense.

What advice would you give to property managers trying to stay compliant?

Although I don’t deal with property managers directly, I’d say the key to staying compliant is being organised and keeping information up to date. Having the right documents, evidence and records readily available can make the reporting process much smoother. It’s also important to understand what information is required, keep on top of any changes, and make sure anything requested for a report is provided clearly and accurately.

Can you share a memorable project or experience from your time at 4site?

One experience that stands out was working with the team to get certain reports completed and signed off within a tight timeframe. There was a lot to get through, so everyone worked together to make sure the reports were accurate and ready on time. It was a good example of everyone pitching in and getting the job done together.

What's your favourite thing about working here?

My favourite thing about working here is the people. Everyone is friendly, supportive and easy to get along with, which makes it a really enjoyable place to work. There’s also a fun atmosphere, so even when things are busy, it still feels like a positive environment to be part of.

What aspects do you like about the company culture?

I like how friendly and welcoming everyone is. There’s a really supportive atmosphere, and people are always happy to help each other out. I also like that we can have a laugh while still getting the work done, which makes it an enjoyable place to work.

What advice would you give someone considering a career at 4site?

I’d say be open to learning and don’t be afraid to ask questions. There’s a lot to take in at first, especially if you’re new to the industry, but everyone is really supportive and happy to help. If you’re willing to learn, get stuck in and work as part of a team, it’s a great place to build your knowledge and skills.
