Meet the team: Laura Hill
At 4site Consulting, our people are at the heart of everything we do. Behind every successful appointment, new starter journey and internal HR process is a team dedicated to supporting both our colleagues and the continued growth of the business.
In this Meet the Team spotlight, we introduce Laura Hill, Recruitment & HR Coordinator at 4site Consulting. Laura plays an important role in helping us attract talented people, support employee onboarding and strengthen the processes that keep our teams running smoothly across our health, safety, fire, asbestos and water risk management services.
As 4site continues to grow within the UK property compliance and building safety sector, Laura’s work helps ensure we bring the right people into the business and provide a positive experience from the very beginning.
What does a typical day look like for you?
My day involves a huge variety of responsibilities. A large part of my role is recruitment-focused, including sourcing and attracting high-quality candidates for a wide range of office-based and operational positions. This involves advertising vacancies, screening CVs, coordinating and scheduling interviews, liaising closely with hiring managers, and keeping candidates informed throughout the recruitment process.
Alongside recruitment, I manage the onboarding process for new employees, including issuing contracts, arranging inductions, and ensuring a smooth start within the business. I also support the wider HR function through a variety of administrative duties, helping to maintain efficient and effective people processes across the organisation.
What did you do before you worked at 4site?
I originally qualified in childcare and spent several years working in hotels across different parts of Spain as a Crèche Manager. After returning to the UK, I worked as a nanny before transitioning into office-based roles.
It was through these roles that I discovered my passion for recruitment. Over the past six years, I have built my recruitment experience within organisations such as Essex Police and the airport sector, supporting a wide range of hiring needs and developing my skills across both recruitment and HR functions.
What's one thing people might be surprised to learn about your job?
One thing people might be surprised to learn about recruitment is just how often candidates don't attend interviews or stop responding altogether after initially showing a lot of interest. It's not uncommon to spend time arranging interviews, coordinating diaries, and keeping everything on track, only for a candidate to ghost you at the last minute.
It can be frustrating, but it's very much part of the job. Recruitment requires resilience, adaptability, and the ability to quickly move forward and focus on finding the right person for the role.
Can you share a memorable project or experience from your time at 4site?
One of the most memorable projects during my time at 4site has been taking ownership of the entire recruitment process and helping to transform it into a more streamlined and effective function.
Before I joined, recruitment was managed by individual department managers. As the business grew, this became increasingly difficult to manage consistently and efficiently. I was able to centralise the process, introduce more structure, and create a clear recruitment journey from attraction and selection through to onboarding.
It has been incredibly rewarding to see the process evolve into something much more robust and organised. We now have a much smoother flow, improved communication with hiring managers and candidates, and a recruitment process that supports the company's continued growth. Seeing the positive impact this has had on both the business and the candidate experience has been a real highlight for me.
What's the most unusual issue you've encountered as part of your role?
One of the most unusual experiences I've had was while interviewing a candidate for a Health & Safety Advisor position via Microsoft Teams. We had scheduled the interview in advance, but when the call started, it quickly became apparent that he was in the middle of carrying out a site visit.
To make things even more unexpected, he was conducting the interview from an elderly resident's flat and had taken a seat on her sofa while speaking with us. Halfway through the interview, the resident appeared and kindly brought him a cup of tea. It was certainly not the interview setting any of us had anticipated!
While it was a little bizarre, it was also a reminder that in recruitment you never quite know what situations you're going to encounter. Every day brings something different.
What's your favourite thing about working here?
I have built strong working relationships and like to think that I'm approachable and supportive to everyone. One thing I'm particularly proud of is helping to remove some of the "HR stigma" that can exist in other organisations, where people may be hesitant to approach HR. I want employees to feel comfortable coming to me, whether they need support, advice, or simply a chat.
We also have a great culture where there's a healthy balance between working hard and having a laugh. Everyone is committed to delivering a high standard of work, but we also support each other and work collaboratively as a team.
Another aspect I really value is the autonomy and trust I've been given in my role. My manager trusts me to make recruitment decisions and manage the process independently, knowing that those decisions are made with the best interests of 4site in mind. That level of trust is incredibly rewarding and has allowed me to make a real impact within the business.
How has 4site supported your professional development?
4site has been very supportive of my professional development, particularly in helping me expand my knowledge and experience within HR. While my background is primarily in recruitment, I wanted to develop my understanding of the wider HR function, and the company has encouraged and supported me in doing so.
I am currently studying towards a Level 3 CIPD qualification in People Practice and am now around three-quarters of the way through the course. I'm looking forward to achieving the qualification and applying the additional knowledge and skills I've gained to my role.
The support I've received has allowed me to continue growing professionally, broaden my expertise beyond recruitment, and build confidence in an area of HR that is relatively new to me.
How would you describe the company culture?
I would describe the company culture as supportive, encouraging, and flexible. There is a genuine willingness to listen to new ideas, and people are open to trying different approaches if they can improve the way we work.
One word I would use to describe the culture is evolving. As the business continues to grow, we're constantly adapting to new ways of working, expanding teams, and developing our services and expertise. With that growth comes change, and there is a strong focus on bringing people along on that journey and helping them adapt to new processes and ways of working.
What I particularly value is that, despite the growth and change, there remains a collaborative and supportive environment where people are encouraged to contribute ideas, develop professionally, and work together towards shared goals.
What advice would you give someone considering a career at 4site?
I would highly recommend a career at 4site. One of the biggest strengths of the company is its approachable, supportive, and understanding management team. As a family-run business, there is a genuine human touch to the way people are treated, which creates a positive and welcoming working environment.
Compared to some larger corporate organisations, where it can sometimes feel like you're just a number, people at 4site genuinely care about their colleagues and their wellbeing. Employees are valued as individuals, and there is a real emphasis on support, communication, and teamwork.
If you're looking for a company where you can make a meaningful contribution, build strong relationships, and be part of a business that continues to grow and evolve, then 4site is a great place to be.
